Osmocalc Display

OsmoCalc Display

The display for OsmoCalc shows a data grid in the main component of the screen, and to the right, a radial gauge that displays the calculated total osmolality in milliosmoles per kilogram. The calculated osmolality value is shown at the bottom of the gauge.

The table contains the nutrients in the ingredients that we are evaluating, including grams per day and key components such as dry matter, fat, protein, ash, and others. We can modify the display by clicking on the micromineral menu item, which toggles the display of microminerals. In most cases, the contribution of microminerals to overall osmolality is very small, so we typically do not need to display those values.

We can also display the concentration of various electrolytes—particularly when using electrolyte-based ingredients—by clicking the electrolyte menu item.

The first data column represents the main liquid, either milk replacer or whole milk, along with the calculated osmolality for that ingredient. If we are using milk replacer, we typically include water in the calculation of osmolality. Note that water is represented in milligrams of components per liter, since the concentration of solids and minerals is usually quite low. The calculated osmolality of the water is then included, and the total osmolality is determined.

The final column shows the calculated concentration of the overall solution. As we make changes to the grams per day, we can see the osmolality update dynamically as the various components of the diet are adjusted.

That’s the display for the OsmoCalc osmolality calculator. Thanks for watching, and be sure to check out other OsmoCalc Knowledge Base videos to learn how to get the most out of the program.
