Hello and Welcome! My name is Dr. Jim Quigley, author of Calf Notes.com and Managing Director of Calf Notes Consulting. Welcome to OsmoCalc, a new educational initiative of the team at Calf Notes Consulting.
We recognized that the terms “osmolality” and “osmolarity” were becoming common in the calf milk replacer industry. Lots of scientific literature and popular press articles referred to the value of osmotically balanced calf milk replacers and the risk of those with excessively high osmolality. However, there isn’t a straightforward method to calculate the osmolality in liquid calf feeds without expensive equipment or a sophisticated spreadsheet.
That’s why we developed OsmoCalc, a simple osmolality calculator. The program is based on the calculation of osmolality from the contribution of key osmotically active compound such as lactose, sodium, and chloride.
