What is OsmoCalc?

Introduction

Welcome to OsmoCalcl! This Help document provides a quick introduction to the purpose of the OsmoCalc.

Who is Calf Notes Consulting?

Calf Notes Consulting, LLC is a consulting firm based in Florida that provides training, tools, and consulting services for raising young dairy calves and heifers. The firm was founded in 2023 and has provided consulting and training services to farmers, universities, and corporations all over the world.

Dairy producers increasingly recognize the need for progressive feeding and management programs for their young calves so they may express their full genetic potential for growth and future milk production. Calf Notes Consulting provides the information needed by producers and their advisors to optimize health and growth throughout the growing period, so that animals are fully prepared to enter the milking string or feedlot and become productive animals in the herd.

What is OsmoCalc?

OsmoCalc is an executable program (.exe) that calculates the osmolality of a mixture of liquids typically fed to calves. These can include whole milk, milk replacer powder, water, electrolytes, and other additives that may be added to milk or milk replacer. The calculation is based on the predicted osmolality of the osmolytes within the solution – typically, lactose and minerals. The number of milliOsmoles per kilogram (osmolality) is the calculated.

Lactose is a major contributor of osmolality in most liquid feeds fed to young calves. However, the concentration of lactose is not commonly listed on feed tags; therefore, the concentration of lactose is ESTIMATED based on the assumption that lactose is the primary component once the contributions of water, protein, fat, and ash are removed from the total amount fed. This assumption may be incorrect in some situations, especially when non-milk ingredients are included in a formula. However, the program allows for inclusion of other components in a formula – e.g., NDF and dextrose – that can improve the prediction.

Why OsmoCalc?

Measurement of osmolality of liquids fed to calves has been identified as important to abomasal emptying, predisposition of calves to disease, digestion, and future growth. Osmolality is not a fixed value, but will change depending on ingredients in the liquid mixture and solids concentatration of the mixture.

Is OsmoCalc Accurate?

In most cases, OsmoCalc will provide a reasonable estimate of the actual osmolality of a solution. Only in cases where a milk replacer contains significant non-milk ingredients will the calculations be skewed. Typically, though, OsmoCalc provides an accurate estimate of the actual osmolality and can be used to evaluate different feeding scenarios.
